About the museum
The museum opened in 1997 thanks to an agreement between the Ministry for Cultural and Environmental Heritage, the Diocese of Mileto-Nicotera-Tropea, the Provincial Administration of Vibo Valentia and the Municipality of Mileto. It tells the civic and religious history of Mileto, a Norman capital and the first Latin episcopal see in southern Italy, and is housed in a wing of the Bishop’s Palace, next to the cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta.
The collection, with a strong historical and artistic character, covers a period from the late Imperial age to the 19th century and is spread over two floors. On the ground floor are finds from the Roman era, probably coming from ancient Hipponium, and medieval artefacts from the former Benedictine abbey of the Santissima Trinità and the old cathedral: fragments of polychrome stained glass and a rich group of capitals of Norman art from the 11th and 12th centuries.
On the second floor, the first room holds documents from the 14th century, with the remains of the monumental sarcophagi of Ruggero Sanseverino and Giovanna d’Aquino, and works attributed to the so-called Master of Mileto. The four following rooms house the sacred art collection, with silverware, an ivory crucifix attributed to Alessandro Algardi, vestments and devotional paintings.
