About the museum
The civic museum of Nicotera is housed in the rooms of the Castello Ruffo in the historic centre, an 18th-century building erected on the ruins of earlier fortifications. It collects material from the territory, covering a very wide span of time from prehistory to the Middle Ages.
The finds from the archaic period, linked to the trading post of the Greek colony of Medma, which was located on the coast of Nicotera, are particularly interesting. The first room displays a numismatic collection, fragments of medieval pottery and Roman ceramics of the 4th century AD.
From the localities of Torre Galli and Caroniti come Palaeolithic flint tools, Neolithic finds such as obsidian from Lipari and pottery with a model hut. The hall contains fossil remains of prehistoric mammals and a fragment of parietal bone from a child of Neanderthal type, as well as the grave goods of the Final Bronze Age from the necropolis of Torre Galli and those of the Iron Age from the contrada Ferrari.
