About the museum
The Pinacoteca “Michele de Napoli” was created from the bequest by which the painter Michele de Napoli (1808–1892), born in Terlizzi, gave his collection to the municipality: over a thousand paintings and drawings, together with the palace in which he lived. Officially opened in 1898, it is the largest collection devoted to a single artist in Apulia.
The 18th-century palace, with a rusticated façade and a balcony supported by carved stone masks, was restored and reopened to the public in 2009. In 2010 the exhibition “Michele de Napoli: dalla ‘pittura istorica’ alle opere tarde” was set up, with 85 works from almost sixty years of activity between Naples, Rome and Terlizzi.
The collection includes sketches and preparatory studies for religious, historical and mythological paintings, portraits (including those of his parents and an unfinished self-portrait), figure studies, still lifes and flower paintings. It also has a lapidary with inscriptions, coats of arms and stone ornaments, largely recovered from the Collegiata di San Michele Arcangelo, demolished in 1782.
