About the museum
The municipal gallery of contemporary art in Ruvo di Puglia is housed in several rooms of the former Dominican convent, formerly used as a middle school, in the historic centre of the town. The museum is named after Domenico Cantatore, a 20th-century painter from Ruvo, whose work forms the core of the collection.
The route is spread over six rooms: three are devoted to Cantatore, one to Michele Chieco and one to the Premio d'Arte Città di Ruvo, held from 1955 to 1967. Original photographs and writings by Cantatore himself are also on display. Alongside these there are works by other artists linked to Ruvo, including Raffaele van Westerhout, Silvio Dodaro, Cesare Marino and Filippo Alto.
The building has a bookshop, a conference room and an open-air atrium used for cultural events. It also hosts temporary exhibitions of art and photography.
