About the museum
The Museo della Città e del Territorio di Corato is housed in the former town prison, a building dating from the early 20th century. The route begins with the oldest archaeological finds, around 8,000 years old, documented by the Neolithic settlement of Torrepaone, which has the earliest impressed pottery and numerous flint tools.
Pre-Roman remains from the tumulus tombs of San Magno are on display, as well as Roman finds such as milestones from the Via Traiana. Among the works of art, the fresco of the Pietà from the first half of the 16th century and the relief of the Madonna del Latte, dated 1540 and attributed to Paolo Catalano da Cassano, stand out. The museum also houses the stone material from buildings that collapsed in the hydrogeological disaster of 1922.
The room “Cartografia storica” presents photographic reproductions of the most important documents from the 18th and 19th centuries. The historical section is complemented by the ethno-anthropological section, which collects traditional objects and work tools of agricultural and pastoral activities. The museum constantly points visitors to the surrounding area and suggests visits to the San Magno archaeological site and the dolmen “Chianca dei Paladini”.
