About the museum
The Parco delle Kentie stands on a former palm nursery in the centre of Riposto, the Giardino Allegra, which was active until the 1960s. It takes its name from around 100 Howea forsteriana palms, up to 10 metres tall, planted in open ground in the early 20th century, which create a unique environment in the region. On an area of 9,000 square metres the garden was later enriched with other palm species.
The Comune di Riposto has entrusted the organisation and scientific management of the park, under an agreement, to the Dipartimento di Botanica of the Università di Catania. Besides the garden, the complex includes a greenhouse for species sensitive to cold, an educational museum with fossils and plants, which aims to raise visitors’ awareness of the importance of plants, and a laboratory with a herbarium of around 1,800 specimens of Etnean and Sicilian species, where activities for schools take place.
