About the museum
The Museo del Presepio in Giarre is housed in a noble 19th-century palazzo and was established on the initiative of the Giarre section of the A.I.A.P., the Associazione italiana amici del presepio (Italian Association of Friends of the Nativity). It holds around two hundred presepi: papier-mâché presepi from Lecce, terracotta presepi from Sicily and Apulia, Neapolitan figures, presepi in Trentino stone pine wood (cirmolo), and dioramas that bring to life a slice of Sicilian rural life, with costumes, household objects and figures from the past.
Works by members of the local association are also on display. The association regularly organises courses on the art and technique of making presepi.
