About the museum
The parish museum of Gizzeria is linked to the church of San Giovanni Battista, in Piazza Malta, and is organised in two sections: one of sacred art and one of rural life.
The sacred art section holds works and objects from the 17th and 18th centuries, including a statue of the Madonna Addolorata from 1700, a 19th-century noble dress embroidered with gold thread, a collection of ancient sacred images, 19th-century plates for communion wafers, and silver and brass liturgical furnishings. Among the oldest pieces are an inlaid marble tabernacle frontal and a holy water stoup, both on 17th-century bases of Gimigliano green stone.
The rural section presents agricultural and craft tools and domestic objects from the 19th century: among them a stone hand mill, a clay-and-straw brick, blankets woven with broom, objects in limestone, and three traditional costumes of Gizzeria, for the unmarried woman, the married woman and the widow respectively.
