About the museum
The Museo del Pane in Panettieri is an educational exhibition dedicated to the farming and bread-making tradition of the village’s inhabitants. Panettieri is a small village in the Sila Piccola at about 937 metres above sea level. According to the most widely accepted hypothesis, the name of the village itself recalls the Calabrian word for “baker”.
The museum is housed in one of the old public ovens in the historic centre, restored for this purpose. On the lower floor are the traditional wooden kneading troughs (the “majille”) and the boards used for proving and for carrying loaves, together with a wood-fired oven rebuilt on the model of the originals, which is still lit during guided tours. On the upper floor, the home and shop of a baker from times past have been reconstructed.
Panettieri is also home to the Museo del Brigante, dedicated to Giosefatte Talarico.
