About the museum
The museum was founded in 1961, on the occasion of the centenary of Italian unification, to commemorate the siege of Turin in 1706 and the Savoyard army miner Pietro Micca, who sacrificed his life by detonating a mine to stop the French soldiers who had penetrated the galleries. The site stands on what remains of the old Citadel, in an area where the Mastio (keep) also houses the Museo nazionale d’artiglieria.
The two exhibition rooms hold relics, documents, photographs, films and scale models illustrating the city’s defences and the course of the siege. From the rooms one can reach about 400 metres of counter-mine galleries, dug at a depth of between 6 and 14 metres below the city, among the best-preserved parts of the defensive system.
The visit to the galleries takes place with a guide and is the most appreciated part of the route. The museum also promotes educational initiatives and animated tours, in collaboration with the Associazione Amici del Museo Pietro Micca.
