About the museum

The museum occupies the first floor (piano nobile) of the western wing of the Apostolic Palace, overlooking the façade of the Loreto basilica. The palace was designed by Donato Bramante on commission from Julius II in 1507; the project then passed to Antonio da Sangallo the Younger, with later interventions by Sansovino, Boccalini and, in the 18th century, Vanvitelli. The rooms were originally a guesthouse for nobles, cardinals and princes.

The collections began to form at the end of the 19th century, in conjunction with the restoration of the shrine directed by Giuseppe Sacconi. The works are distributed across ten rooms on the piano nobile.

Among the main collections are the Urbino majolica of the Fontana and Patanazzi workshops, from the Spezieria (pharmacy) of the Santa Casa, the Raphaelesque tapestries donated in 1667, the canvases of Lorenzo Lotto, the frescoes detached from the dome by Cristoforo Roncalli, known as Pomarancio (1610–1614), and goldwork and devotional objects from the treasure of the shrine.
