About the museum

The Museo del Mare in Porto Recanati is housed in the former fish market, a modern two-storey building constructed between 1975 and 1980, which hosted the wholesale fish market until the end of the 1990s. The municipality then assigned the spaces to the committee of local fishermen to gather the heritage of maritime culture.

The main hall, of about 600 square metres, uses photographs, films and interactive technology to tell the story of the fishermen between the 19th and 20th centuries: local families, the development of fishing and the maritime culture behind the village, which later became a seaside resort. At the entrance a reception room displays images of sailing boats, each with the emblem of its family, of Porto Recanati and of Civitanova.

Two 360° viewers show traditional fishing techniques, some films explain how nets were made and how life was lived at sea, while multitouch tables and immersive projections complete the route. One section is devoted to the biodiversity of the Adriatic.
