About the museum
The Pinacoteca comunale “Attilio Moroni” was established by the Municipality of Porto Recanati thanks to the donation of Attilio Moroni (1909–1986), a jurist, art lover and collector who for a long time was rector of the University of Macerata. The works are displayed in seven rooms on the upper floor of the residential areas of the Castello Svevo.
The route opens with the room dedicated to Biagio Biagetti, a painter born in Porto Recanati and a major figure of 20th-century sacred art, later director of the Pinacoteca Vaticana (Vatican Picture Gallery). The adjoining room holds 16th- and 17th-century canvases attributed to Carlo Maratta, Luca Giordano, Rosso Fiorentino and Lo Spagnoletto. The entrance hall houses drawings and paintings by Adolfo De Carolis, Domenico Morelli, Felice Casorati and Remo Brindisi, while the other rooms show 19th-century paintings from the Tuscan, Roman, Venetian, Neapolitan and northern Italian schools, with works by Irolli, De Pisis, Signorini, Mancini, De Nittis, Soffici and Postiglione. The collection is completed by sculptures, ceramics and a few ancient vases.
The castle was built after the privilege granted in 1229 by Emperor Frederick II of Swabia to the people of Recanati, who obtained the right to build a port and a fortress at the mouth of the Musone and Potenza rivers. Today it also houses a permanent archaeological display and the Arena Beniamino Gigli.
