About the museum
The activity of the Associazione Amici Museo Presepio Paolo VI Pro Missioni dates back to Christmas 1958, when in the premises of the old oratory of San Vigilio some young people, guided by the curate Don Gino Zoli, set up a nativity scene. In the following years a stable group formed that refined the mechanisms and devices of the presepio. After the death of Pope Paul VI (Montini) in 1978, the nativity scene was dedicated to him; from 1979 the association has published an annual newsletter, “Il Ninnolo”.
The route includes a large mechanised nativity scene of about 50 square metres, set in a wide grotto of tufa stone, with a Nativity in painted wood from the Val Gardena craft tradition, scenes of daily life, the visit of the Magi to Herod, and a simulation of day and night, the passing of the comet and snow. Along the galleries are six mechanised biblical scenes, four from the Old Testament (including the Creation, the Great Flood and the Crossing of the Red Sea) and two from the New Testament, and a collection of about one hundred nativity scenes from around the world.
The museum also holds relics of Paul VI: the papal shoes, the zucchetto (skullcap) and a manuscript from the Holy Year 1975. The outdoor area houses the mosaic monument to the jubilees, an iron cross, an icon of the Madonna della Stella and several fountains in tufa stone.
