About the museum
The house in Celle dei Puccini, in the municipality of Pescaglia, was for generations the home of the Puccini family, where five generations of musicians grew up. In the village the ancestor Giacomo was born in 1712, founder of a long dynasty of organists and composers, and the future composer of Butterfly spent happy moments of his childhood, returning for the last time on 26 October 1924, shortly before his death.
After the death of his father Michele, the family had to sell the house. In 1973 the building became “the Puccini house” again thanks to donations from the daughters of his sister Ramelde and to its purchase by the Associazione Lucchesi nel Mondo, which still owns it today. Over the years the collections have grown and the displays have been adapted to the building; the last complete rearrangement dates from 2008, for the celebrations of the 150th anniversary of the composer's birth.
Today the museum is a true house museum: seven rooms over two floors hold more than a hundred photographs, more than fifty letters and around twenty music manuscripts, together with personal objects of Puccini's. The route includes the entrance hall with the family tree, the bedroom where Giacomo was born, the old country kitchen and the room dedicated to family members. A multi-purpose space for groups, exhibitions and lectures has been created in the cellar.
