About the museum
Museo Remiero was founded in Limite sull’Arno in the historic headquarters of the Società Canottieri Limite, founded in 1861, and preserves the memory of the bargemen (navicellai) and the shipyards that worked along the river for centuries. The documentation centre is named after Mario Pucci, secretary of the society, who died in 2016 and is regarded as the real architect of keeping the old headquarters as a museum. The official opening took place on 3 April 2004, after a long series of exhibitions and research projects, often with an anthropological approach, carried out in the 1970s and 1980s.
In 2010 the collection was moved to its current location and later reorganised by the museum commission. On 13 June 2019 the volunteer association that runs the institute was founded; it has a statute and regulations, with a professional director and volunteers.
The rooms house scale models of the boats built locally, historical photographs and documents, tools used by caulkers and shipwrights, and a section on the shipyards. The museum is part of the Sistema museale Museo Diffuso dell’Empolese Valdelsa and is a member of the Associazione Nazionale Piccoli Musei, whose national secretariat is based at the institute.
