About the museum

The museum occupies the old school of the Odin hamlet, in the municipality of Angrogna, in the Waldensian valleys of Piedmont. The single classroom has been preserved as it was at the beginning of the 20th century: low ceiling, limewashed walls, wooden benches and a large central stove fed with firewood brought by the pupils themselves.

The display cases hold registers, exercise books, wall charts for learning pronunciation and a Bible, often the only book present both at school and at home, as well as material in French. The decorations include a portrait of Charles Beckwith and an oleograph of Jesus blessing the children, chosen after the Concordat of 1929 in place of the crucifix in Waldensian schools.

The museum tells the story of education in the Alpine valleys and of the cultural and spiritual identity of the Waldensian community. It is part of the Sistema museale eco-storico delle Valli valdesi, run by the Fondazione Centro Culturale Valdese.
