About the museum
The museum opened in March 2002 in the 19th-century building of the former bishop's seminary of Montalto delle Marche, the birthplace of Pope Sixtus V and already a diocesan seat established by him. It gathers works from the churches of Montalto and the hamlets of Porchia and Patrignone.
The route presents liturgical vestments embroidered in gold thread with symbolic flowers, paintings, wooden sculptures and silverware, including works by Vincenzo Pagani, Francesco Agnelli, Pietro Lucatelli and Natale Ricci. Of particular note is the collection of processional crosses from the 14th to the 16th century, restored at the Opificio delle Pietre Dure di Firenze.
The main piece is the Reliquiario di Montalto, a Parisian work from the late 14th century with enamelled gold parts, gems, pearls, sapphires, rubies and a sardonyx cameo. Sixtus V gave it to his home town shortly before it became a diocesan seat. After restoration it has been on display in the museum since summer 2014 and has been lent to major international museums.
