About the museum
The Pinacoteca civica of Montalto delle Marche is part of the civic complex on Piazza Umberto I, the heart of the village linked to the memory of Pope Sixtus V. The nearby Palazzo del Governatore, built from 1587 for the representative of the papal government, was the seat of the Presidato authorities and later also a prison; after restoration work in 1995, the picture gallery and an archaeological section were housed there.
The rooms are named after the four communities that now make up the municipality: Montalto/Sistina, Patrignone, Porchia and Valdaso. Visitors can see furnishings and robes of 16th-century magistrates, gold medals donated by Sixtus V, a coin from the local mint, sacred paintings of the 17th and 18th centuries, portraits of the pope and of his sister Camilla Peretti, a carved wooden portal known as the Porta dei Leoni, and historic photographs of Montalto from the 19th and 20th centuries. One room also recreates the study of the architect Giuseppe Sacconi, designer of the Altare della Patria in Rome.
Since the 2016 earthquake, the Palazzo del Governatore has been closed to the public and restoration work is under way; the Metroborgo project plans to bring the civic collections together in a single museum of the territory.
