About the museum

The museum occupies the church of the Annunziata, in the historic centre of Cossignano, a single-nave building without an apse, with a small attached sacristy, entered through a simple portal in Ascoli stone. Inside the same church is also the municipal Antiquarium “Niccola Pansoni”, devoted to Picene finds.

The oldest fresco, in a niche near the entrance, depicts the Madonna and Child with saints and dates from the second half of the 15th century. The other frescoes belong to the 16th century: the most valuable are in the style of the Crivelli school, uncovered already at the beginning of the 20th century, while others were freed from limewash more recently. Among these are Saint Lucy, the Madonna enthroned with the Child and Saint Roch (dated 1530), and Saint Sebastian, which emerged in 2005 during the removal of an altar.

In the niche to the right of the high altar is preserved a large Deposition of 1530, attributed to Cola dell'Amatrice or to a local master. The most important work is the altarpiece by Vincenzo Pagani, oil on panel, with Saint Anthony Abbot enthroned, Saint Anthony of Padua and Saint Job.
