About the museum

The museum occupies the former Cantine Vaselli, in the heart of Castiglione in Teverina, in an area between the Tiber and Lake Bolsena where the Strada del Vino della Teverina winds its way. Count Romolo Vaselli (1898–1967) bought the cellars from Count Luigi Vannicelli Casoni and from 1942 started high-quality wine production there, at the centre of his agro-industrial company INEC, which also traded olive oil, tobacco and Chianina beef. The wines, including Orvieto and table reds, carried the Vaselli brand on the domestic and export markets until 1994, when the cellar ceased activity.

Restored by the municipality through the MUVIS project, the cellars are now a museum that combines history, art and oral memory. It is part of the network of demo-ethno-anthropological museums of the Lazio Region and of the national association “Città del Vino”.

The route runs over five levels, from the hall with the history of the cellar down to four underground floors. Visitors pass the room with the map of the Tiber valley, the concrete fermentation tanks, used as spaces to walk through in dim light, the wine laboratory of oenologist Riccardo Cotarella and the historic bottling line. After the rooms with wooden barrels, you descend about 27 metres to the “Cattedrale”, the imposing cellar with giant barrels more than three metres in diameter.
