About the museum
La Serpara is a sculpture garden created by the Swiss artist Paul Wiedmer, who together with his wife discovered the valley more than thirty years ago. The site is a valley bounded by the Rio Chiaro, a stream of clear water, and by pale rock faces. Since then Wiedmer has worked every day to integrate nature and works of art, and the property has grown to about 4 hectares with the purchase of the adjoining land.
The first sculptures were placed in the garden on his return from exhibitions; each work is designed in direct relation to the place. For more than twenty years Wiedmer has invited artist friends to take part in building the garden: the park grows from year to year with new works by Wiedmer himself, with exhibitions and with long-term loans.
Among the artists represented in the garden are Thomas Baumgärtel, Albert Braun, Bruno Ceccobelli, Daniel Spoerri, Graziano Marini, Attilio Pierelli, Pavel Schmidt, Bruno Wank, John Greer and many others. Visitors reach the park along a winding provincial road and find a place for contemplation, where they can enjoy art and nature at their own pace. Two books chronicle its first ten and first twenty years.
