About the museum
The museum is housed in the stables of the trotting horse stud “San Marone”, in the Asola valley, and is part of an equestrian park together with the stud farm and the trotting racecourse of Civitanova Marche, among the hills of the Marche with a view of the sea. It is directed by Captain Ermanno Mori and collects and preserves material of every kind on the horse, with particular attention to the history of trotting races and the sport horse.
The route presents period posters, 19th-century banners, vehicles such as the “padovanella”, an ancestor of the racing sulky, memorabilia of personalities from the world of horse racing, and reminders of champions such as Tornese and Varenne. The material is arranged by geographical area to follow the development of racing in Italy. The horseshoes of great champions are also on display.
The museum also includes an equestrian library with volumes from the 16th century to the present, a photo archive with more than 30,000 original photographs, and a collection of sports and equestrian periodicals from the 19th and 20th centuries. It also publishes material to promote horse culture.
