About the museum
Palazzo Lazzarini, a 13th-century building overlooking the Piazza del Comune, stands on the ruins of the ancient fortress and has undergone many alterations over the centuries. Today its neo-Gothic appearance predominates, the result of work carried out at the beginning of the 19th century. On the ground floor are two rooms of the municipal library and the seat of the Archeoclub d'Italia di Morrovalle, which runs the museum together with the municipality.
Climbing the stone staircase leads to the picture gallery. The first room displays a series of oil-on-canvas portraits of illustrious men, including Dante, Petrarch, Tasso, Annibal Caro and Pico della Mirandola. The second room commemorates the Monte di Pietà, which was active in the town from at least the second half of the 15th century. Paintings from local churches and convents follow, including a Madonna and Child with Saints attributed to Claudio Ridolfi, the 16th-century Madonna del Soccorso and a Madonna del Cardellino.
Since 19 June 2021 an archaeological section has been open, with finds that emerged in 2019 during works for a gas pipeline: a Picene necropolis of the 7th–6th century BC in Contrada Burella and Roman remains at Borgo Santa Lucia, linked to a Fanum Apollonis. An immersive room with augmented reality shows the excavations and 3D reconstructions of the burials.
