About the museum
The Museo Storico della Guardia di Finanza was established on 5 July 1937 to preserve and tell the story of the corps. At first it was housed in the “Piave” barracks in Rome; in 1960 it moved to the complex on Piazza Mariano Armellini, where the Comando Generale is also based, to have more exhibition space.
The route follows a chronological and thematic order. The rooms on the lower floor trace the origins in the Legione Truppe Leggere and the Napoleonic era, the Risorgimento, the Customs Guard and the Regia Guardia di Finanza (Royal Finance Guard), the two world wars, alpine service, the fight against smuggling and international missions. On the upper floor are the Sacrario (memorial) and the Sala Armi (Weapons Room), while one section is devoted to the corps’ symbols: war flag, coat of arms, the yellow flame insignia (fiamme gialle), the griffin and Minerva.
The collections include weapons, uniforms, photographs, medals, documents and trophies won by the sports athletes of the Fiamme Gialle. The museum in Rome is complemented by detached sections in various cities, including Bergamo, Bari, Predazzo, Gaeta, Orvieto, Pratica di Mare, Venice, Florence and Catanzaro.
