About the museum
The last sulphur wagon left the Perticara mine in April 1964. Just six years later, in 1970, Sulphur was born, the historic mining museum, one of the first significant examples of industrial archaeology in Italy. Since 2002 it has occupied renovated museum spaces in the former Sulfureo Certino works, where the Vittoria shaft still dominates the landscape as an ancient symbol of the village's link with the underground city.
The power plant, the compressor hall, the lamp room, where lamps and flammable materials were stored, and the workshops have been restored and transformed into a route that explores mineralogy, geology and centuries of mining activity in Perticara. One room presents the Earth's crust and splendid minerals from around the world, including fluorescent ones. Another illustrates the work of the miners, from the extraction of the sulphur-bearing stone to the “sulphur bread”, with a large collection of lamps from Roman times to battery lamps.
At the heart of the route is a sequence of underground workings reconstructed in a scenic way, showing the evolution of extractive activity from the 17th to the 20th century. The museum also preserves old scientific instruments for topographic and environmental surveying, and it is one of the sites of the Parco dello Zolfo delle Marche e della Romagna.
