About the museum

The Centro Visita Antonio Garcea is in the municipality of Taverna, in the locality of Monaco, near Villaggio Mancuso, inside the “Poverella – Villaggio Mancuso” biogenetic nature reserve, about 40 km from Catanzaro. It is run by the Ente Parco nazionale della Sila and comprises a “Centro Natura” with a conference hall, a room for temporary exhibitions and a thematic museum, and a “Centro Studi” for nature, environmental and forestry education, with a teaching room, library, laboratory and an outdoor green classroom.

The two thematic museums of the centre are dedicated respectively to the evolution and structure of the forest formations of the Sila (“Le foreste della Sila”) and to the relationship between human communities, the mountain and the forest, understood as a cultural landscape shaped by human activity over millennia (“Le foreste e l'uomo”).

Outdoors, paths run around the buildings: a nature trail, a geological trail, the garden of aromatic and medicinal herbs, the garden of forest culture, the Silan biodiversity nursery and the rural village of ancient Sila. The Teatro Verde, with about 500 seats, and the Piazzetta Unicef host cultural, recreational and educational events.
