About the museum
The archaeological museum of Tiriolo was inaugurated in 1995 and in 2018 was recognised as a regional archaeological museum. It occupies the ground floor of a historic building on Via Pitagora, which once housed a telephone exchange, and is arranged in two adjoining rooms. It is part of the TirioloAntica museum network, which also includes the traditional costume section, the Gianmartino archaeological park and the Fortezza-Monte ecomuseum.
The first room presents a selection of finds from the Tiriolo area, mostly from the Bruttian period (4th–3rd century BC). Among the most significant pieces are a copy of the senatus consultum on the Bacchanalia and an Oscan-language defixio. The second room is dedicated to the large Bruttian monumental tomb discovered in 2008 at Castaneto, which documents the funerary rites, beliefs and everyday life of the local population.
On the second floor of the building is the museum of traditional Calabrian costume, with 36 costumes reproduced by hand according to research into local traditions, especially from the provinces of Cosenza and Catanzaro, and two original garments.
Behind the building lies the Gianmartino urban archaeological park, excavated between 2014 and 2016 and now equipped with a shelter and explanatory panels. It preserves a large building from the 4th–3rd century BC, known as the Palazzo dei Delfini (Palace of the Dolphins) after the floor mosaic showing two dolphins, with walls up to 1.5 metres high and painted plaster still visible. On Mount Tiriolo, finally, the Parco della Fortezza preserves the remains of a Byzantine kastron, probably from the second half of the 6th century AD.
