Interactive museum in the Ansitz am Orth in Cortaccia with about 12,000 years of local history, from prehistory to consumer society; guided visits only.
Exhibition for the museum's 50th anniversary with unusual and curious objects from the collections and storerooms, some shown for the first time: dubious remedies, ingenious technical tools and original inventions.
About the museum
The museum, opened in 1976 in the Ansitz am Orth in Cortaccia on the Strada del Vino (Wine Road), focuses on people and presents a “Stück Geschichte von jedem”, that is, a piece of history of each person. Over the years it has been renewed several times: a new concept in 2006, a major renovation in 2012, an extension in 2019 and a further restructuring with extension in 2024.
The collections comprise about 25,000 objects, of which more than 7,000 are on show in the permanent exhibitions, and cover about 12,000 years of regional history. The sections range from the first traces of human life to copper smelting in the Bronze Age, the Roman period, grain and bread, fashion, silk (“Faszination Seide”), wine culture, the Industrial Revolution and mass production, and finally curiosities and rarities, deities, witches and saints. Works by the painter Josef Vigil Schweiggl are also displayed in the storerooms, which can be visited.
Visits are led by a guide and make use of multimedia animations, working devices and hands-on stations; an information system lets visitors interact with the objects via smartphone. On the museum’s property there is also an archaeological area where excavations began early on.
