About the museum

The Provincial Wine Museum is part of the Provincial Museums of South Tyrol and is a branch of the Provincial Museum of Customs and Traditions. After 1945, mechanisation of agriculture and viticulture quickly replaced the old tools; a group of collectors around the future curator Luis Oberrauch and the president Walter Amonn sought to save their traces and create a museum. The museum opened on 18 September 1955 and was the first to open in South Tyrol after the war.

In 1983 the association was dissolved, and the museum, until then private, was attached as a branch to the Provincial Museum of Customs and Traditions. In 1988 it moved from Ringberg Castle to the centre of Caldaro, into the former Di Pauli cellar, formerly the administrative building of the Caldaro-Laimburg lordship and seat of a court of law.

The permanent exhibition presents the cultural history of viticulture: historical tools for work in the vineyard and cellar, a fully equipped cooper's workshop, religious images connected with wine, and drinking and transport vessels. The deep cellar hosts tastings, and the museum's vineyard grows mainly old, little-known grape varieties.
