About the museum
The private Grande Guerra museum at Passo Fedaia holds about 700 relics of the First World War recovered from the Marmolada glacier, where the retreat of the ice continues to yield material in good condition. The collection was assembled by the De Bernardin family of Rocca Pietore; Andrea De Bernardin has looked after it since 2004.
The rooms, set up in 1997, are inside the Rifugio Alla Seggiovia, overlooking the Fedaia artificial lake. Among the objects on display are sewing kits, identity discs, surgical scalpels, machine guns, a field telephone, a working Erika typewriter, a trench periscope and a large display of headgear; there is also a drill used to dig tunnels and shelters in the “Città di Ghiaccio” (Ice City), as well as period photographs.
The visit includes the screening of historical films and a specialised bookshop with hundreds of publications, some of them edited by De Bernardin himself. The owner is often present and happily tells the story of the relics. The museum belongs to the Rete Trentino Grande Guerra (Trentino Great War network) and is situated at the start of the routes that lead up to the glacier.
