About the museum
The necropolis of Fossa was discovered by chance in 1992 on the left bank of the Aterno, during works for an industrial shed. Excavations, carried out until 1999 over an area of about 3,500 square metres, brought to light over five hundred tombs, attributable to the Italic population of the Vestini and probably linked to the fortified settlement of Monte Cerro.
The site was used for more than eight hundred years, from the 9th century BC to the 1st century BC. The burials are of different types: tumuli bounded by stone circles, with alignments of menhirs on the west side of the male tombs; simple pits; and chamber tombs with bone funerary beds. At a later date cremation spread, with the ashes placed in urns.
The park is equipped with walkways and information panels. The grave goods (funerary beds, ceramics, weapons, ornaments) are displayed in the Musè – Nuovo Museo Paludi di Celano.
