About the museum
The Museo del Fiore is part of the network of museums and visitor centres of the Parco del Gran Sasso e Monti della Laga. It was created in an underground room of the convent of San Colombo in Barisciano and aims to illustrate simply but rigorously the richness and diversity of the park’s plants, the factors that shaped them and the importance of protecting them.
Visitors make a “virtual journey” through the different ecosystems and plant landscapes of the protected area, aided by images, films, animations and plant material that can be touched and handled. The museum is suitable for schools and universities and can be combined with a visit to the adjoining Centro Ricerche Floristiche dell’Appennino, which holds a large herbarium and a carpoteca (collection of fruits and seeds), and with the trail through the ancient Selva dei frati forest that surrounds the convent, one of the best-preserved oak woodlands in central Italy.
