About the museum

The palazzo in Via Patini, built in the 16th century and a typical example of an L’Aquila patrician house, was bought in the 18th century by the Lombard branch of the Signorini Corsi family. In 1967 the lawyer Luigi Signorini Corsi left the Municipality of L’Aquila the art furniture, paintings and coin collection of the reception rooms, on the sole condition that they remain on site to form the typical apartment of an L’Aquila family.

After about thirty years the Municipality entrusted the Università Internazionale dell’Arte di Firenze with the project to adapt the building as a museum. The collections vary in type, materials and periods: the paintings include a Nativity of the Virgin by Baccio Bandinelli, a Holy Family attributed to the circle of Botticelli, a San Lorenzo by Battistello Caracciolo and works by Solimena, Sebastiano Conca, Ferraù Fenzoni and Teofilo Patini; the furnishings include, among others, a Neoclassical secretaire that belonged to Napoleon and a desk that belonged to Pope Clement XIV.

Of particular importance is the coin collection of 1,490 specimens, with coins from the mints of the Abruzzo region, one of the few collections of this kind in the region. The 2009 earthquake severely damaged the building, which was declared unsafe; the entry on the Musei italiani portal lists it as temporarily closed.
