About the museum
The Ocre municipal museum is housed in part of the Monastery of Santo Spirito d'Ocre, which is municipal property. The other part of the complex is used as accommodation and an events hall and can be accessed by reservation and during events.
The monastery was founded in 1222 by Placido da Roio on land donated by Count Berardo of Ocre; it formally joined the Cistercian Order on the founder's death in 1248. As early as 1330 it was held in commendam, including by members of the Barberini family, and in 1652 it was among the small monasteries suppressed by Pope Innocent X.
The building occupies an almost rectangular area of about 48 × 64 m, with a quadrangular courtyard that was the former cloister, onto which face the church, the refectory, the dormitory and the chapter house. The church preserves frescoes dating to around 1280, while the chapel-sacristy contains late fourteenth-century frescoes with scenes from the life of the Blessed Placido.
