About the museum
The museum is housed in the building of the old slaughterhouse (Macello), built in 1926, in Via Ferrarin. It is conceived as a project in evolution that helps the community of Bellaria-Igea Marina build its identity by telling the history and memory of the area, in particular its link with the sea.
The route runs from antiquity to the most recent generations: the Roman settlements along the Via Popilia, the maritime and fishing culture, and the development of seaside tourism. The main find is the central emblem of a mosaic floor, recently restored, dating from between the late 3rd and the mid-4th century AD and coming from an urban-rustic villa at Bordonchio.
Funeral objects are also on display, including a full-scale copy of the stele of Egnatia Chila, a freedwoman whose face has not survived. A chronology of the main events in the town, photographs, multimedia material and objects from the last two centuries complete the display. Many pieces were lent by residents, fishermen, hoteliers and lifeguards.
