About the museum
The Oratorio della Purità was built in 1757 beside Udine Cathedral at the wish of Cardinal Daniele Dolfin, who had the nearby theatre of the Mantica family bought and demolished so that no place of entertainment would stand beside the cathedral. The project was entrusted to Luca Andreoli.
Giambattista Tiepolo painted the fresco of the Assumption on the ceiling, considered a masterpiece of his second Udine period, and the altarpiece of the Immaculate Conception over the altar. His son Giandomenico executed eight biblical scenes in monochrome on a gold ground along the walls. On the left side there is a baptismal font of 1480 by Giovanni di Biagio da Zuglio.
During the Second World War the frescoes were protected from the bombing; on the night of 7 March 1945 two incendiary devices pierced the roof, but they went out on the upper floor, above the Assumption. After damage caused by damp in the 1950s, Giandomenico’s frescoes were detached, restored and put back in place in 1969; the whole painted ensemble underwent a further conservation intervention in 1995.
