About the museum

The Museo etnografico del Friuli, housed since 2010 in Palazzo Giacomelli in the ancient Borgo Grazzano, holds a collection on local traditional culture between the 18th and 20th centuries. The holdings were formed through the donations of Gaetano Perusini and of Luigi and Andreina Ciceri, and the museum forms part of the Civici Musei di Udine (Udine Civic Museums).

The palazzo has a 16th-century core and takes its name from its last owner, Sante Giacomelli, who bought it in 1900. At the end of the 19th century the façade, decorated with faux red bricks, festoons and mascarons, and the central salon were remade; the painted ceiling of the salon depicts Europe and Africa in reference to the opening of the Suez Canal. On the first floor is also the wooden furniture made between the late 19th and early 20th centuries by the Udine cabinetmaker Antonio Brusconi.

The route occupies the three floors of the building and is organised into thematic sections with educational and multimedia displays. The theme of living in family and community revolves around the fogolâr, the Friulian hearth, and the rites that mark the year, from festivals to Carnival with its masks; there follow rooms on lighting, on the clock-making of Val Pesarina, on the “arts of fire” and on the work of woodcutters. One part is permanent, two rooms rotate, and some spaces host in-depth temporary displays. The museum also has photographic and documentary archives.
