About the museum
The Museo Friulano di Storia Naturale (Friulian Museum of Natural History) was founded in 1866 as the Museo Friulano on the initiative of the scholar Jacopo Pirona and is now part of the Civici Musei di Udine (civic museums of Udine).
The collections comprise botany, geology and palaeontology, mineralogy and petrography, prehistory and anthropology, and the zoology of invertebrates and vertebrates. The museum also holds a specialist library and the “A. Desio” archive, with around 85,500 documents, and carries out research and publishing activities.
The exhibition route is organised into the rooms “The origin of the Earth and the Anthropocene” and “Friuli, capital of biodiversity”, to which is added the museum garden with teaching stations, an outdoor weather station and a teaching beehive monitored by webcam.
