About the museum

The palazzo was built between 1593 and 1598 by Carlo Zengraf, formerly secretary of the Provincial Estates of Gorizia. It was lived in by the Coronini Cronberg family until 1990, the year of the death of the last descendant, Count Guglielmo (1905–1990), who left it to a foundation so that it could become a museum open to the public.

The Count arranged the rooms as they are seen today: the route includes thirteen furnished rooms on the ground and first floors, with furniture, objects and works of art from the 16th to the 19th century. Among the best-known pieces are the teste di carattere (character heads) by the sculptor Franz Xaver Messerschmidt. The Fondazione Palazzo Coronini Cronberg, which runs the museum, also holds a library and an archive.

The palazzo is flanked by a historic park of about three hectares, with avenues, centuries-old trees, small temples, statues and fountains in a Romantic taste. It was created at the end of the 19th century as part of an urban regeneration programme that aimed to make Gorizia a “città giardino” (garden city). A restoration project funded by the PNRR aims to return the garden to its original Mediterranean and landscape characteristics.
