About the museum

Palazzo Attems Petzenstein was completed in the rococo style in 1750 at the wish of Count Sigismondo d’Attems Petzenstein, who employed the court architect Nicolò Pacassi. The two frescoed rooms by Francesco Chiarottini, including the Stanza delle Metamorfosi di Ovidio with inventions on archaeological subjects, date from around 1780. The Italian-style garden houses the lapidarium and, at its centre, the Fontana dell’Ercole (Fountain of Hercules), created after 1769 to a design by Pacassi.

Since 1900 the palazzo has housed the Musei Provinciali di Gorizia. Damaged in the First World War, it reopened in 1924 as the Museo della Redenzione; today it has spaces for temporary exhibitions and, on the piano nobile (main floor), the Pinacoteca.

The rooms hold almost one hundred works, including paintings, drawings, prints and sculptures, in a chronological route from the mid-18th to the mid-20th century. In the salone d’onore, dominated by Antonio Paroli’s “Dei dell’Olimpo” (Gods of Olympus), stands the monumental Pala Attems (1758) by Giambettino Cignaroli. The collection of Giuseppe Tominz, the best-known portraitist from Gorizia, is significant, with his “Autoritratto con il fratello Francesco” (Self-portrait with his brother Francesco, around 1818), as is the permanent collection of Josef Maria Auchentaller, a representative of the Vienna Secession. Also represented are Italico Brass, Luigi Spazzapan, the Futurists Tullio Crali and Sofronio Pocarini, the sculptors Marcello Mascherini and France Gorše, and the Gorizia-born Anton Zoran Mušič.
