About the museum
Gorizia’s castle dominates the city from the hill of Borgo Castello. It was built around 1146, when the title of Count of Gorizia first appears; the original core was a stone keep, enlarged in the 13th century with a noble palace. After the death of the last count, Leonardo, in 1500 the castle passed to the Habsburgs, then briefly to Venice (1508–1509), and in the 16th century it was used as a prison and barracks.
In the 18th century the complex was extended with bastions and powder magazines; damaged in the First World War, it was restored between 1934 and 1937 by the architect Ferdinando Forlati, who gave it back its medieval appearance.
Today the castle is a museum of Gorizia’s Middle Ages. On the ground floor the kitchen, the prison and the armoury are visited; on the first floor the Sala del Conte, with its decorated wooden ceiling, and the Sala degli Stemmi. A multimedia room tells the story of the former County of Gorizia, and a permanent exhibition, Theatrum Instrumentorum, presents European musical instruments from the late Middle Ages to the early Baroque. The visit ends on the wall-walk with views over the city.
