About the museum
The museum was founded in 1924 as the Museo della Redenzione (Museum of the Redemption) in Palazzo Attems and reorganised in 1946 after the damage caused by the Second World War. Since 1990 it has been housed in the basements of the 16th-century Case Dornberg and Tasso in Borgo Castello, with an approach that was innovative at the time: it shifted the focus from the military dimension to the everyday life of the conflict. Since 2016 it has been run by ERPAC FVG together with the other provincial museums of Gorizia.
After a long programme of structural and museographic renovation, the museum reopened on 17 July 2025 with a new route through ten rooms, curated by Alessandra Martina and Lucio Fabi. The narrative follows the lives of Italian and Austro-Hungarian soldiers at the front and of the civilian population, with uniforms, weapons, ammunition, documents and photographs.
The heart of the route is the diorama of the battlefield, renewed with multimedia installations, alongside a section on the destruction suffered by Gorizia and a final room on memory, with the post-war monuments and war memorials. The texts are in Italian, Slovene and English, and the route has been made accessible with ramps, lifts and platform lifts.
