About the museum

The EPIC project is the flagship project of the European Capital of Culture 2025 Nova Gorica – Gorizia. It is a cross-border participatory space dedicated to the interpretation, study, exchange of views and understanding of the history of the 20th century, which encourages dialogue on identity, borders and the shared heritage of the area.

The centre is in the former unloading hall of the Slovenian Railways, directly beside the Nova Gorica railway station, where the paths of people and goods once crossed. In the northern part of the building is the permanent exhibition Mesto na meji (City on the Border), on the mezzanine above it a gallery for temporary exhibitions, and in the southern part a multi-purpose hall and a café.

The exhibition Mesto na meji was prepared by the curator Dr Kaja Širok. It goes beyond established national frameworks and presents the history of the Goriška region through the personal and collective stories of its inhabitants, chronologically through the 20th century. In eight rooms, among them Na pragu mesta (On the Threshold of the City), Multikulturno mesto (The Multicultural City), Krvavo mesto (The Bloody City), Okupirano mesto (The Occupied City) and Brezmejno mesto (The Borderless City), objects and video testimonies intertwine, complemented by guided tours and an educational programme.
