The exhibition addresses the role of forests and plants in the face of the climate crisis, taking as its case study the territory managed by the Magnifica Comunità di Fiemme.
The palace was built towards the end of the 13th century as the temporary seat of the vicar of the prince-bishop of Trento, who twice a year went to the Val di Fiemme to administer justice. After 1314 it became the fixed seat of the bishop’s representative, and the prince-bishop chose it as his summer residence; in the 15th century it was enlarged and transformed, reaching its present size under Udalrico III of Frundsberg.
Between 1537 and 1540, at the wish of Bernardo Clesio and his successor Cristoforo Madruzzo, the palace was renovated by artists called in from the workshop of the Castello del Buonconsiglio and became one of the finest Renaissance residences in Trentino. At the beginning of the 19th century, with the end of the prince-bishopric, it was used as a prison; in 1850 it passed to the Magnifica Comunità di Fiemme, which in the 20th century promoted several restoration campaigns.
After the last intervention, completed in 2009, the building was assigned to use as a museum-picture gallery and is today the valley’s main cultural centre. The itinerary includes the noble rooms of the vicar’s apartment, with the cycle of Renaissance frescoes attributed with good probability to Marcello Fogolino, and the collection of paintings of the Fiemme school of painting.
