About the museum

The museum is located in Guggal, a hamlet of Anterivo (Altrei) at about 1,180 metres above sea level, in the Trudner Horn nature park, close to the border with Trentino. It is set up in the birthplace of Johannes Zwerger, which is preserved and open to the public as the bishop’s museum.

Zwerger was born on 23 June 1824 in Anterivo, became a priest and professor at the seminary in Trento and from 1863 was vicar general for the German-speaking part of the Diocese of Trento. In 1867 he was appointed Prince-Bishop of Seckau, near Graz. He took part in the sessions of the First Vatican Council (1870), wrote around sixty pastoral letters and other works, including “Die Reise in die Ewigkeit” (1872). He died in Graz in 1893 and remains highly revered in his home municipality.

The house contains period furniture; writings, paintings and documents illustrate the bishop’s life. Visits are only possible with a guide.
