About the museum

The museum grew out of an initial collection prepared for an exhibition of 1950 at Palazzo Venezia in Rome, later moved to Anagni for that year’s Holy Year. The display, curated by Giuseppe Marchetti Longhi on behalf of the Istituto di Storia e di Arte del Lazio meridionale (ISALM), developed between 1950 and 1973 in the rooms on the second floor of the building.

The aim was to accompany the post-war reconstruction and to make the area better known. The route displays photographs, plans, maps, reproductions of paintings, casts, models, copies of documents and archaeological finds, and is arranged in three sections: the ancient section, from prehistory to the classical age; the medieval section, with attention to the pontificates of Innocent III, Gregory IX, Alexander IV and Boniface VIII; and the Renaissance and modern section, with local costumes and legends.

The museum is scientifically coordinated by the ISALM and run independently by the Suore Cistercensi della Carità (Cistercian Sisters of Charity), who own the premises. It is part of the Organizzazione Museale Regionale.
