About the museum

The Gavorrano Natural Mining Park grew out of a project to recover and enhance the mining heritage of the area, which later became part of the protected areas system of the Colline Metallifere. Today it is one of the gateways to the Parco nazionale delle Colline Metallifere, a geopark recognised by UNESCO. The area comprises two mining complexes, the Parco delle Rocce and Ravi-Marchi.

In the Parco delle Rocce are the visitor centre, the Museo minerario in Galleria, set up in a tunnel that once stored explosives, and the Teatro delle Rocce, used for shows and events. The museum uses lights, images and sound to illustrate the stages of mining work and the harsh conditions of the miners. Next to it the GEOMET has opened, a museum devoted to the geodiversity and mining history of the area.

The Ravi-Marchi area is an open-air industrial archaeology site, where the surface plant of the pyrite mine closed in 1965 has been restored. Guided tours explain how the ore was processed after extraction.
