About the museum
Vetulonia, the ancient Vatluna, was one of the most important Etruscan cities. Its wealth derived from the mineral deposits of the area and from its link to the sea through Lake Prile, which favoured trade. The city reached its peak in the 7th century BC and declined in the second half of the 1st century BC.
The ancient city was recognised at the end of the 19th century thanks to the research of Isidoro Falchi. Today the park comprises the areas around the village, with the walls of the arx, the Roman-period quarters of Poggiarello Renzetti (Scavi Città), with a stretch of the decumanus, the Casa di Medea and the Domus dei Dolia, and the remains of dwellings at Costa Murata.
Along the Via dei Sepolcri lie the necropolises, with the tombs of the Belvedere, the Pietrera, the Diavolino II and the Fibula d’Oro. The Tomba della Pietrera, a large mound with a stone drum of about 60 metres and two superimposed chambers, is Vetulonia’s most imposing funerary monument. An audio guide to the park is available on the izi.travel platform.
