About the museum
The picture gallery grew out of the collection of Camillo d’Errico (1821–1897), a landowner and mayor of Palazzo San Gervasio for about thirty-five years. From 1853, after the death of his father Agostino, he invested the income from the estate in buying paintings and books, largely on the Neapolitan antiques market and from noble collections such as those of the De Sangro, Caracciolo and Ottajano princes.
By his will he arranged for the paintings and volumes to form a public library and picture gallery, with the establishment of a legal body (ente morale). The painting collection comprises 298 works, with a core of Neapolitan school paintings of the 17th and 18th centuries, together with about 500 prints from the 16th to the 19th century and a library of rare books.
The building is the palazzo constructed between 1829 and 1833 by Agostino d’Errico, a typical 19th-century landowner’s palazzo in the south, which shaped the urban development of today’s Corso Manfredi. In 2018 the Ministry declared it to be of cultural interest.
